Most of these are available at The Server Side but I'm very often surprised how few people are aware of these . . . .
There's a number of other free Java/J2EE books out there too but they really didn't pass muster.
I've tried to group them according to how good I felt the quality was - "Fair to middling" means the content probably should be free (or already is free elsewhere) whereas "Great" means it's a really nice little freebie for us developers who spend so many $ each year on tech books.
Some of them are pretty old (circa '00-'02) but still pretty good nonetheless.

One of the very best java books, that happens to be free is Component Development for the Java Platform by Stuart Dabbs Halloway available here
http://www.develop.com/us/technology/developmentorseriesdownload.aspx?id=11, it gives great insight on Java EE building blocks, reflection, class loading, dynamic proxies, byte code weaving, serialization... Plus Stuart Halloway is a highly gifted writer, one of the few who can demistify complex topics with concise and elegant wording.
